Aloha ʻĀina: Kaʻena (Homeland Defense Radar)

Current land and water issues in Hawaiʻi with focus on ʻEwa and Waiʻanae moku

Kaʻena (Homeland Defense Radar)

SUMMARY: The United States military is proposing to build a missile defense radar system called, the Homeland Defense Radar - Hawaii (HDR-H), on Kuaokala ridge in Kaʻena or in Kahuku. Community members and activists oppose this project for multiple reasons including cultural and archeological importance of the site, the further desecration of ʻāina, and questions about if the missile defense system would be successful. As of 2022, the project has been tabled.
