Hūlili is a multidisciplinary forum for current research that examines the nature, needs, and strengths of Hawaiians, their families, and their communities. Through collaboration and critique, Hūlili fosters new connections and shared insights to mobilize greater Hawaiian well-being. “Ka Huaka‘i 2014” is an in-depth analysis of Native Hawaiian education and well-being. Recent findings point to both positive gains and persistent challenges among Native Hawaiian learners and families.
Kamehameha Schools is the single largest donor to public education in Hawaii. Their website provides access to research reports covering a variety of subjects, from early childhood to educational policy. Especially useful for those interested in education of Native Hawaiians.
The University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Library and Information Science Program (LIS) received a National Leadership grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for a project entitled, “Pathways to Excellence and Achievement in Research and Learning (PEARL).” The PEARL team will design and implement a training program for high school teachers and librarians to address “expectation gaps” between high school and post-high school pursuits. A training guide has been produced that focuses on the mastery of 21st century skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, interpreting information, and analytic reasoning. The project will be cooperatively developed with the Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) as part of the DOE’s Senior Project initiative.
The Strive HI Performance System, approved by the U.S. Department of Education in May 2013, replaces the federal No Child Left Behind law with a system better designed to meet the needs of Hawaii’s students, educators and schools.
All individual school reports contain the following:
--School Setting: Describes the student population and the school community.
--School Improvement: Summarizes progress made in accomplishing school improvement goals.
--School Resources: Includes teacher credentials, staffing levels as well as the adequacy of school facilities.
--Vital Signs: Includes School Quality Survey (SQS) results, student conduct, test results, dropouts, and graduation/retention rates.
