SUMMARY: The Thirty Meter Telescope International Observatory was slated to begin construction in July 2019. Community members and activists, commonly known as kiaʻi, oppose the project for various reasons including the cultural significance of this mauna and the continual desecration of land. Kiaʻi have been occupying the access road since July 15, 2019. As of July 2020, the issue is ongoing though TMT construction and law enforcement on the mauna have been suspended.
