Center for Labor Education & Research Guide : Home

This guide is to provide researcher and student access to information and collections that live in the Center for Labor Education & Research Archive and Reference Library.

Aloha!

Welcome to the Center for Labor Education and Research (CLEAR) Archive and Library. We support labor education, research, and services for students, workers, and the public in Hawai'i. CLEAR also offers a Labor Studies certificate program and non-credit courses to support contemporary labor education statewide.

We maintain print, book, and audio visual labor history collections on labor law and history in Hawaiʻi and the U.SFor example, we have information on Hawaiʻi's union organizations, labor laws, policies, worker histories, worker advocacies, campaign ephemera, and educational materials from the Hawaiian Kingdom (after 1830s), Territory, and Statehood periods. Please enter your topic terms in the search engine at the top right of this page, or browse the red tabs at the top of this site, to discover subject listings that may interest you. Below, the How to Access Our Collection provides policies on how to start researching here; the Scope and Locations of Our Collections provides information on the media types of our collections and where you can find them. The Collection Highlights provides an overview of some of our significant collections.

History of the CLEAR Archive

Robert Hasegawa and Dr. William Puette were previous initiators of CLEARʻs Library and Archive.  CLEAR first began at the quarry portables at UH Manoa, then it moved to Leeward Community College before moving to UH West Oahu James & Abigail Campbell Library.  Dr. Puette worked with Joy Chong-Stannard, Chris Conybeare and others to use and create resources in this archive that led to books and documentaries on Hawai'i labor history topics.  Dr. Puette and staff created the inventories that the current Librarian is using to build an online searchable archives database.
